A THOUSAND-YEAR JOURNEY THROUGH MYTHOLOGY, EMPIRES AND KNIGHTS

Rhodes' history is rich and fascinating, shaped by numerous civilizations that have left a profound mark on its cultural and architectural heritage. Since ancient times, the island has played a key role in the eastern Mediterranean due to its strategic location between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Antiquities

Greek mythology relates that Rhodes was chosen by the sun god, Helios, as his favorite island. As early as the Mycenaean era, around the second millennium B.C.E., the island was inhabited, but it was during the Doric era, in the eighth century B.C.E., that Rhodes began to prosper, with the founding of the three great cities of Lindos, Ialyssos, and Kamiros. These city-states flourished thanks to maritime trade and cultural influences from across the Mediterranean.

In 408 B.C., the three cities united to found the new capital, Rhodes City, which became one of the most powerful centers of the time. During this period, the island was famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a giant bronze statue erected in honor of the god Helios. Although the Colossus collapsed in an earthquake in 226 B.C., it remained a symbol of grandeur for centuries.

Hellenistic and Roman periods

After withstanding the assaults of various conquerors, including the Persians and Macedonians, Rhodes maintained some independence during the Hellenistic period, becoming a center of culture and learning, known for its school of rhetoric. With the rise of Rome, Rhodes was absorbed into the Roman Empire, but continued to prosper as an important commercial and cultural hub.

The medieval era: the Knights of St. John

A crucial turning point in Rhodes' history occurred in 1309, when the island was conquered by the Knights of St. John. These crusaders turned the island into one of their main strongholds, building impressive fortifications, including the famous Palace of the Grand Master. During this period, Rhodes became a bulwark of Christianity against the expansion of the Ottoman Empire.

The Knights ruled the island for more than two centuries, until 1522, when the island fell under the control of the Ottoman Empire after a six-month siege. Despite the Ottoman rule, which lasted about four centuries, the Greek population kept their traditions alive.

Italian occupation and World War II

In 1912, during the Italian-Turkish war, Rhodes came under Italian control. The Italians left a significant architectural imprint, constructing buildings in the Fascist style and restoring many of the medieval monuments, such as the Palace of the Grand Master. Under Italian rule, the island was modernized, but its population was involved in difficult events during World War II, when it was occupied by German forces.

Modern Rhodes

After the war, Rhodes and the Dodecanese were annexed to Greece in 1947. Since then, the island has experienced great economic growth.

Rhodes is not only an island rich in history and natural beauty, but also a natural film set that has attracted filmmakers from all over the world. One of the most famous films shot on the island is “The Guns of Navarone” (1961), starring Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn, set during World War II. The spectacular footage was shot along the rocky shores of Rhodes, particularly in Navarone Bay south of Lindos and the one each named after actor Anthony Quinn.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Before you leave for Rhodes, there is some important information to keep in mind to ensure you have the best experience on the island.

  • Climate and Best Time to Visit
Rhodes enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is May through October, when temperatures are ideal for enjoying the beaches and hiking. July and August can be very crowded and hot, so if you prefer to avoid crowds, May, June, September and October are perfect.
  • Trasports on the Island
The best way to explore Rhodes is undoubtedly to rent a car. The island is large, and many of its most beautiful attractions are remote and difficult to reach by public transportation. Buses, while available, are infrequent and do not always cover the most remote areas, forcing you to wait in the sun.
Although quads and scooters may seem like a cheap and adventurous option, they are not ideal for exploring Rhodes. The long distances and often steep, unpaved roads make them less safe and comfortable. With a car you will have the freedom to move around more safely and comfortably, enjoying every corner of the island.
  • Currency and Payments
Being part of Greece, the official currency is the Euro (€). It is advisable to have cash with you at all times, especially if you visit smaller villages or less touristy places, where they may not accept card payments. However, most restaurants, stores and hotels accept credit and debit cards.
  • Language and Communication
The official language is Greek, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Knowing a few basic Greek words, such as “kalimera” (good morning) or “efcharistò” (thank you), is always appreciated by locals.
  • Beaches and Outdoor Activities
Don't forget to bring snorkeling equipment, as the crystal clear waters are perfect for exploring marine life.

HOW TO REACH RHODES

Rhodes is easily accessible by both air and sea, making it an accessible destination from different parts of Europe and mainland Greece.

By Plane

Rhodes International Airport, Diagoras (RHO), is located about 14 km southwest of Rhodes town. During the tourist season, there are direct flights from many European cities, making travel quick and convenient. If you are departing from Greece, there are daily flights from Athens, with a duration of about an hour. Booking in advance is recommended, especially in high season.

By Ferry

Rhodes is well connected by sea. Ferries depart regularly from the port of Piraeus (Athens), with trips varying between 12 and 16 hours, depending on the ferry you choose. This option also allows you to take a rental car with you from the mainland. There are also frequent connections to other Dodecanese islands, such as Kos, Symi, and Karpathos, as well as to the nearby Turkish coast, particularly from Marmaris, which can be reached in about 1 1/2 hours.

HOW MANY DAYS TO DEDICATE TO RHODES

To fully experience the island of Rhodes and discover all its facets, the advice is to devote at least 5-7 days to your visit. This time will allow you to leisurely explore the main historical attractions, as well as enjoy the beautiful beaches, hidden bays and traditional villages, and if you wish, also add a visit to nearby Symi or Halki

Every corner is an explosion of color, while the air is pervaded by the scent of flowers that adorn windows and balconies. Along the walls, you will often find brightly colored fabrics hanging, adding an extra touch of vibrancy. A must-see is the Traditional House, a small museum that allows you to immerse yourself in local culture and traditions. It is perfect for those who want to combine a day at the beach with a cultural visit. Lindos also offers a second beach, Saint Paul's Bay, which is smaller but just as charming.
    • Prasonisi is a unique place located at the southern end of the island, where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea. The beach is famous among windsurfers and kitesurfers because of the strong winds that blow in the area. It is also ideal for those who want a different experience, walking on a sandy isthmus that divides the two seas.
